Celebrating International Women's Day

A tribute to all the women in the world, March 8 is celebrated as International Women's Day and this year's theme is declared as The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.  On the other hand, the United Nation's theme for the 2013 celebration is,  "A promise is a promise: Time for Action to End Violence Against Women."

As Women's Day is usually celebrated in Turkey with receptions, conferences, and luncheons for women where political and business leaders as well as leading educators and other influential guests speak during the events, some cities also hold other events such as street marches, demonstrations, and protests across the country.  In Ankara, the capital city for instance - women were trying to voice out their concerns against gender-based discrimination while in Hakkari, another group of women in a protest were demanding more active roles and more opportunities for women in the society.  Since Turkey is known to have serious domestic violence issues, most messages that were given out today during its various events were focused on the efforts to protect and promote women's rights and fight violence against women.

So here's wishing all the mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, sisters, siblings, girlfriends, and to all the women in the world a Happy International Women's Day and may the promise to take action and finally end violence against women be truly kept and put into reality.
